In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) where sperm and an egg are joined outside the body in a laboratory dish. The fertilized egg (embryo) is then transferred to the woman's uterus.

IVF is the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology. The procedure can be done using your own eggs and your partner's sperm. Or, it may involve eggs, sperm or embryos from a known or anonymous donor. In some cases, a gestational carrier — a woman who has an embryo implanted in her uterus — might be used.

**Who is IVF for?**
IVF is used to treat many causes of infertility, including:
* Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
* Male factor infertility including decreased sperm count or sperm motility
* Women with ovulation disorders, premature ovarian failure, uterine fibroids
* Women who have had their fallopian tubes removed
* Individuals with a genetic disorder
* Unexplained infertility
