Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) involves the direct injection of a single sperm into a mature egg. This step bypasses the need for the sperm to penetrate the egg on its own, making it an effective treatment for male infertility problems.

ICSI is performed as part of an IVF cycle. After egg retrieval, the ICSI procedure is used to fertilize the eggs. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the uterus.

**Why is ICSI performed?**
* Very low sperm count
* Poor sperm motility (movement)
* Abnormal sperm morphology (shape)
* Previous failed IVF attempts
* Sperm retrieved surgically from the testicles or epididymis
